In the room they found 15 unguarded voting machines from early voting which is still in progress. Watch these starteling films and wonder. I understand that a probono attorney is being saught to file an injunction delaying the elections till this can be invistigated.

George Allen has lied, and distorted Webb's good name. the objective is to elect representatives who are honest, think for themselves and their constituents, regardless mof their party affiliation and to vote their conscience not necessarily what the party wants. This is honest politics and fair representation. No one party is right all the time.

I agree that cleaning house is the way to go. However, can you really name a Republican who is honest and thinks for himself? It goes against their core beliefs to do so. I sometimes think of Arlen Spector as a decent Republican and then he turns around and sticks in a provision of the un-Patriot-ic Act at midnight that allows firing and re-hiring of US attorneys w/out Senate confirmation. The only reason for doing so was to further corrupt the legal system by slanting prosectuion away from Republicans and towards Democrats, whether or not there is evidence to do so. And now, new evidence suggests that the real reason behind this was to disenfranchise more Democratic voters (especilly African American and other minorities) in swing states in the 2008 election! Thus, we now have the Abu Gonzalez scandal, which could lead to prosecution and impeachment leading to the White House. That is, if the Dems have the spine to do so. Lets face it. All Republicans and a large number of Democrats are corrupt. Yeah, let's all clean house, but not with ANY Republicans.

Hi, is there any way we can assure that every votes counts and everyone gets the opportunity to cast their vote? We CAN'T let the Repugs do the same thing that happened twice before. I know many people that are anticipating a win in November but on the other hand they are worried about another stolen election. We can only hope we win and win big! Making your vote count
We in northern Arizona have found a way to make sure that our vote is accurate and counted. We vote at home. As long as it arrives at the local voter registration office, it is counted by hand. There are no computers or other machines used. We know that our vote is actually counted. More and more citizens are using this convenience, not because they are housebound or otherwise restricted, but to make sure that an electronic voting machine is not used.

I was favorably impressed with Hilary C. at the A.F.S.M.E. Convention last summer (in terms of image, and in saying a few of the right things to that assemblage). Unfortunately I see her as Pro-War, and I have a tendency to identify her with her husband's administration. Mr. Clinton's administration was far superior to that of Mr. Bush, and yet some of the features that I remember about it were:
1) the growth of corporate power during that time was unchecked.
2) the administration gave Lip Service to Civil Rights while doing nothing of substance in the field.
3) welfare "reform".
4) bombing civilians in kosovo and serbia.

Even you can hack a diebold
Just Google "hack a diebold voting machine" for several sites with explicit instructions, all publicly available.
You can hack a Diebold machine if you have the following skills:
Can use a screwdriver.
Can put a small thumbsize drive into the slot designed for it on a circuit board
The only other thing you need is 2 minutes of privacy unsupervised with a diebold machine (such as in a voter's booth). Or less if you work quickly.
The only thing a geek is needed for is to program the replacement drive.
But you don't have to do that. Just get one from somebody who has been preprogramming them (if you're a Young Republican, you'll probably be recommended to someone who does this).
That's it.
Skills you DON'T need to hack a diebold machine:
programming of any level whatsoever
networking skills
knowledge of any computer protocols whatsoever
how to type
mechanical aptitude beyond putting a thingee in a pre-built slot
In other words, this something even rich white guys can do.
Electronic Voting Machines
Electronic voting makes the act of voting meaningless, as we all know the results can be preprogrammed. Many people I know find it disturbingly coincidental that electronic voting machines, in spite of strong resistance and reports that they were subject to easy tampering, were pushed through in key states just in time for the 2004 elections. I myself find it suspect. Bush was not legitimately elected in 2000, and would never have become President without the strong-arm help of his governor brother. He knew his reelection in 2004 was in serious jeopardy, so he (and/or the people who run him) got some insurance in the form of paperless polls. Am I being to brash to suggest that our own politicians, including presidents, are not always honest? Do not think election fraud is something that only happens in other countries. It can and has happened here. We must return to paper ballots, if only to restore confidence in our political process, but more importantly, to restore democracy in our country. If we do not return to a more tamper-proof voting process in time for this election, we may already have witnessed the last free election in this country.
Voting machines and Elections in general
I have the good fortune of living in Oregon. Here we have gone to 100% "vote by mail"Now, some will say " well, there is the possibility of fraud in vote by mail as well" and of course I will agree. There is that possibility regardless of how voting is carried out. I can only say since we went to "vote by mail", turn out has improved considerably, to the best of my knowledge, there has been no huge cry of fraud, turnout has increased tremendously even in mid terms, and best of all, we have a paper trail of all votes cast. I cannot for the life of me understand why the entire country doesn't follow Oregon's lead in this simple, convenient and efficient effort.

I think the electronic voting is cool but.....
For the primary here in FL (where else but Harris country) I strolled up to the booth and the volunteer said, "know what you're doin?", I said "yes" and proceeded to vote. To my horror, in a closed primary, I received a Repukelican ballot! After changing my underwear, I brought to the attention of the voting inspectors. I was quickly hushed and they changed my ballot. Imagine those idiots who vote by flip of the coin would react? They wouldn't and there is how the "other guys" win elections (and buying votes).

Look at the machine note serial number of the machine model and type of said machine
Look at the counter on the machine, make a note of the count,wright it down.
Then post your vote if the count does not change by 1 .
Then question the people in charge.
Get the poll watcher on the stick. File a complaint right then and there.

Whatever the faults with the various systems state by state, what is important is that we do not let it drive us from the polls in November, because then the GOP wins! Vote fraud strikes at the heart of democracy in two ways--by skewing the result as happened in the past two presidential selections, and by increasing voter apathy, thus reducing turnout, which always benefits the GOP. So even as we can claim victory for getting our message out about vote fraud, the unfortunate side effect is that more people become increasingly distrustful of the whole system and use that as an excuse to stay home. We must all do everything we can not only to vote ourselves, but to make sure our democrat supporting friends, neighbors and family members get to the polls too! GET OUT THE VOTE has never been as important as it is now!

Electronic Voting Machines
In Nevada, the Secretary of State rejected the Diebold voting machines because they could not be audited. The machines that are used here, do have a paper trail. Just before I submit my vote to be tallied, I get to see a paper record, and to start over if I make a mistake, etc. This system is not perfect by any mean; I can think of at least a half-dozen ways in which even that paper trail could be altered behind the scenes, leading to an "audited" form of ballot-box stuffing. However, it's a step in the right direction--and VERY IMPORTANT, as Jack Carter, son of former President Jimmy Carter, is running for the US Senate here in a hotly contested race with Sen. Ensign (R-NV).
Nevada's other US Senator, Harry Reid (D-NV and Senate Minority Leader), had once headed the Nevada State Gaming Board, which oversees the integrity of Nevada's gaming system. This includes a VERY THOROUGH AUDIT of the electronic slot machines in Nevada's casinos, even when they're actually out on the floor. Nevada has set the lead in the auditability of electronic gaming machines, and I believe that we should be able to apply similar measures of auditability and accountability to our voting machines. The technology and the methodology is definitely there; what we lack is the political will. Not too surprising, since the GOP is the most likely beneficiary of any shenanigans that could pop up.
It isn't impossible to take on the sloppiness of the election system; Sen Reid, when he took over the Gaming Board in the 1970's, was effective in freeing the industry from the mob's ironclad grip (even getting an attempted car-bombing as a thank-you present!) I would suggest that Sen. Bayh, who's leading this campaign over the voting machines, get in touch with Sen. Reid on this issue if he hasn't already done so; I'm sure that Sen. Reid could offer some useful insights into what needs to be done.

Los Alamos National Labs in Los Alamos, New Mexico (home of the first A-bombs) has been working on such things, and even worse things, since the 1950's. Some of their info is not hard to obtain. They're quite proud of it. Although details are always sketchy. LANL is a very interesting place. Sandia Labs is a bit more well known, operating just a little further south in Albuquerque, NM. Rumors persist that the two labs are connected by deep under ground tunnels. Compared to other activities at these labs, under ground tunnels sound really reasonable. Much work has been done with laser weapons there; but few Americans would believe the kinds of things that seem common place to scientists at LANL. No sci-fi writer would ever get published proposing them. But sunflowers really do work to absorb and neutralize left over rads in the ground from the years of experimenting without paying much attention to the consequences of run-off and dumping waste. *-)

No election automation
I am a professional software engineer, have been for 20 years. The security of high speed financial transactions for brokers and banks has been well established for many, many years. However, these best practices ARE NOT implemented with the electronic voting kiosks of today--and since these good security practices are well known in the industry--there can be ONLY one reason why proper security has not been implemented. What is that?
I would ONLY trust paper ballots counted in front of television cameras with the whole world watching. I do not trust ANY OTHER scheme. They can all be gamed, and they are, and they have been, and they brag about it.
This is the ONLY issue that matters--without a fair and true democracy--no other policy positions matter-- guaranteeing accurate, fair, and trustworthy elections are the foundation of all else. I also strongly believe that the software source code should be available for verification. It is absolutely unbelievable that the inner workings of our voting machines remain 'secret' from independent evaluation. Any software engineer could create an application that appears to function properly when subject to black-box testing and then performs in a different way when placed into service.

During the last presidential election, my son was living in Minnesota.When he went to vote, he voted Kerry/Edwards,but Bush's name was the one that came up on the machine.He cleared it, and did it again-same results.He finally called one of the volunteers over, and told them what happened. He was told by the volunteer not to worry about it, if he hit the button for Kerry/ Edwards, then his vote was for Kerry/Edwards. Luckily, my son has a head on his shoulders, and said he would rather not hit enter, clear the machine, and try a different one.
I read on www.buzzflash.com that it was discovered that a common key, like the ones used to open hotel mini-bars, and jukeboxes, could easily open an electronic voting machine.In light of that, how can anyone even think there's such a thing as secure voting?

I have been on the election board in my district for over 12 years now. We use paper ballots, along with a compliment of equal number of dems and repubs. If a ballot is too hard to understand it is put before a board of equal number of dems and repubs for verification and reading. Almost no problem has been noted. The one exception to this is the proper counting of those so called, "provisional ballots" we as dems sit on the board and verify what is being told to us in our district. If the count seems askew, it is put before the state commission. EVery one should have paper ballots, you can see before your own eyes what you have talllied. There is no reason it cannot be in place all over our country.

I'm in San Diego, California, and during the last primary here, the ballots were paper... you checked a box, or entered a name for a write-in candidate. Pretty simple and easy... no information sitting in the memory of a computer, no way to push a wrong button or be "hacked".
The only problem with that is making sure none of the precinct workers are being illegaly "influenced" in any way by one party or another — just a matter of good oversight by whoever the unbiased entity in charge of ballot checking is. I guess that's my "best case scenario" and how I feel things really ought to be, but whether it's really achievable is anybody's guess.
I have no idea what's in store for me when I go to the polls in November.

The question whether I trust voting machines or not is somewhat misdirected. I would better trust these machines if only one could obtain a printed paper receipt after casting one's vote.
As things went here in Florida, brother Jeb vetoed the establishing of any paper trail for elections in this state, need I say more...?
The US is now as good as most if not all African or Latin American countries where so many elections are habitually stolen...! on multiple part forms... very good idea, especially that YOU get a copy back — kind of like a return receipt, say stamped with date it was received by the agency in charge of receiving and logging in the votes.
The original forms could be numbered, then the agency who handles the votes when they're received could even provide a 2nd confirmation/tracking number when they return it.
Oh, and lets not forget the 'postage paid' envelope, so there's no excuse not to mail it back.
Definitely need to get the electoral college crap out of the picture once and for all! Every person has the right to be represented by their own vote... period.
A little bad news about Oregon Vote by Mail
It is true that in Oregon we vote by mail on paper ballots -- that's the good news.
The bad news is that 100% of those votes are counted by ES&S or Sequoia, two companies notorious for election fraud and abuse.
The only reason we've been spared any trouble SO FAR in Oregon is that our Secretary of State is probably the most stand-up and ethical politician on the planet. If he goes, Oregon could "suddenly and suprisingly" (against all odds and in conflict with pre-election polls) elect a whole bunch of Republicans before we know what hit us.
There are moves in Oregon to have every jurisdiction do some local audits to verify the counts -- it's a great idea to protect us against a right-wing / Rethuglican SoS if one should come along.

What you say about the vote-counting points up another essential element of any truly democratic electoral process--no part of it should be turned over to the private sector. (Well, other than the doughnuts for the poll workers.) For citizens to allow the essential, defining act of a democracy to be privatized is just insane.
A Lot of People Will Probably Vote By Mail Since 2004!
I always enjoyed goint to the voting booth to cast my ballot and wore my 'I Voted' sticker proudly! But after 2004, forget it! I will probably never go out to vote again! It isn't so much the comfort and convience, but I worry someone will get the bright idea to use voting machines and steal my vote. I never thought this would happen in America!

Of course I do not trust electronic machines - no more than I trust gambling machines in Vegas.

I love the way MsMalgoska makes the comparison of Diabold's voting machines with the electronic slots in a casino! So fitting.
We live in Florida and we've been "double-dipped" in Bushes for far too long!!! In our little county of 130,000 people, we still have the pen and color in the egg shaped character for our preferences. But in the multi-million populated counties of Miami/Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, they have the electronic cheating Diabold (I wonder if they are a subsidiary of Halliburton?) machines. They did a practice run in Tallahassee, after sending all these computerized machines to the largest counties, and informed the Jebster (baby brother of GWB and our govenor) that there were "bugs" in the system, which could be fixed!! This was in June for the 2002 election in October. The Jebster, keeping with Katherine Harris' proclivity for the "truth," said there was not enough money in the budget to work out the "bugs." The Jebster's standard excuse is always "...not enough time" or "not enough money in the budget." Hence, the big mess-up with thousands of votes not being counted, especially in precincts that are predominately in black communities.
We voted early in 2002 because we were gonna be out of town at the election date. We later on found out that the EARLY VOTES and the WRITE IN VOTES WERE COUNTED LAST JUST BEFORE CLOSING OUT THE ELECTION RESULTS!
